It's Been a Year and a Half...

Since I married Mr. Ritter.
So glad I did.

Lately, I've been hearing this song on the radio. I always, always stop for it. Makes me think of the chance Michael took on me, the chance I took on him, and it makes me so thankful, for whatever reason, for God's direction, I have to believe, that we took that chance.

Michael, I love you even more today than I did that day I walked down that planked walkway on the beach and married you. I do. All over again.

Train/"Marry Me"

Forever can never be long enough for me
Feel like I've had long enough with you
Forget the world now we won't let them see
But there's one thing left to do

Now that the weight has lifted
Love has surely shifted my way
Marry Me
Today and every day
Marry Me
If I ever get the nerve to say
Hello in this cafe
Say you will
Mm-hmm
Say you will
Mm-hmm

Together can never be close enough for me
Feel like I am close enough to you
You wear white and I'll wear out the words I love
And you're beautiful
Now that the wait is over
And love and has finally shown her my way
Marry me
Today and every day
Marry me
If I ever get the nerve to say hello in this cafe
Say you will
Mm-hmm
Say you will
Mm-hmm

Promise me
You'll always be
Happy by my side
I promise to
Sing to you
When all the music dies

And marry me
Today and everyday
Marry me
If I ever get the nerve to say hello in this cafe
Say you will
Mm-hmm
Say you will
Marry me
Mm-hmm

I'm a Stager

In an effort to share some of the ways I'm able to get so much stuff done with you (by request, by the way, not because I think too highly of myself or anything, I promise!), I have another tip for you.

Stage stuff.

Yep, set out what you need for any given task, in the order that you need it. Then, use said stuff, and put it back into its place. This is a great system because it saves the time of going and getting this or that, and you can just use your time to get whatever task it is that you're doing, done. Plus, clean up is super easy when you're doing it one step at a time, as you go.

I got this idea from cooking. Baking, specifically.

You know how you set all of your ingredients out before you get started? Or, maybe you don't, but I do. And that made a light bulb go off in my head. Hey! I could do this with other stuff, like our morning routine!

Which, by the way, takes a good 3 hours or so. There's your answer, to anyone who asks why we get up at 4:00 o'clock in the morning!

Anyway, at night, before we go to bed, I have this whole little lap I do around our apartment, setting stuff out for the morning.
Some of it makes obvious sense...

Like moving the coffee table to the side so I can do my little cheesy workout video.

I also set out all of the supplies I need to take care of M's bathroom stuff in his bathroom.

See, it's great! When you're done with the man wash, put the man wash away. When you're done with the mouthwash, check that step off your list, put that way, etc., etc., etc..
When I'm done helping him, and getting him dressed, and after breakfast (which I of course also stage for, while he's in the bathroom, usually) then I stage my bathroom before I get in the shower.

Same principle. Make-up on, put it away. Hair did, put hair dryer away, etc., etc..

But, I have to admit (I am my Mother's daughter) I do even pre-load the coffee maker the night before, so that all I have to do when I stumble out of the bed at 4:00am, is hit "start." Down to the Splenda packets already poured into our mugs...

Yeah, 'cause I'm sick like that.

But, seriously. If you're looking to save some time, especially in the morning, try staging your stuff, then cleaning it up/putting it away as you go. I bet you it will save you some time, and help keep your place neater and more organized!
Cheers!
If I think of any other ways to save time, etc., I'll let you know. Feel free to keep the questions coming! Love them! :)

Total Doggie Makeover!

Yesterday, I took Little Miss Thang, a.k.a. Princess to the Beauty Shop.
Here's the before & after:

BEFORE:

And AFTER:

Is that an Extreme Doggie Makeover, or what!?!?!
Too bad this blog doesn't have a scratch-and-sniff feature, because, believe me, that "before and after" would be even more dramatic!! You'll have to just trust me on that one.

Princess is SO CUTE after she gets home from being groomed. She's all bouncy, like she just knows how good she looks! It is really adorable to see our old girl get a little pep in her step.

Speaking of pep.. you know little Mr. Center of Attention needed to get something out of it too. (I have no idea where he gets that from, wink-wink)

So, naturally, he went along for the ride.

And, after we dropped Princess off at the groomer, I took Frito-Lay-Chicken-Nugget-Head-Pie (just one of many loving nicknames we have for Mr. Puggles) to the dog park.
He hadn't been in forever.
He loved it.
Lots of good booty-sniffing and friend-chasing to be done there.
Good times.
Love our pets!

Signs of Spring

I don't know about you, but I'm about DONE with Winter.
I don't care for it much.
Winter's fine and good when it first starts, and it's fun to wear cute hats and scarves and what not.
And while you're anticipating Christmas.

But the part of Winter after Christmas, when it's just cold and dark all the time, and windy, and there's nothing to look forward to... yeah, no thank you.

I've already told you how I loathe February - the fattest, whitest month of all.
Thank GOD that's over.

There have been a few days here and there (in between Winter days) that actually feel like Spring is starting to peek through the cold days.
Trying to arrive.

We've been soaking those days up!!

Eating Summer-y breakfasts.
Yogart and fresh fruit *YAY that Strawberries have started to go on sale!!** and granola. YUM.

Pulling these plastic things out of my purse.
What are they called again? :)

And I was overjoyed the day I saw the guys planting pansies on the streets of DC.
Thank you, God. Spring will be here soon. One day, soon!

Last Weekend Recap

We've been pretty lazy on weekends lately.
I think it's the weather.
I mean, who wants to go out in the fah-reezing cold when you don't have to, right?
So, we've been snuggling up on Saturdays, watching a lot of documentaries.

NOT last weekend!
It was a super busy weekend for us!
And fun-filled!

Friday night, we drove down to Fredericksburg with some friends from church, Will and Rachel, to see our friend Dan in his high school's production of Sweeney Todd.
I didn't know the story, it was quite dark!
Dan did a good job, and you could really tell those teenagers put a lot of hard work into their production.
I love teenagers.
I still love high school, even though I'm pretty far removed from it at this point.

This is Dan with his all-star mom, Deb.
We love Deb. She's the co-leader of our prayer team at church. Awesome lady!
It was also so much fun to road trip it with Will and Rachel! Car rides are a good way to get to know each other!

Saturday, Michael trekked it over to the mall to get his toes done.
There are a lot of things I do for that boy, some of it is definitely personal and yucky... but I have to draw the line somewhere.
And one of those lines I draw is at his toes.
I do not clip toenails.
I just don't.
So, he goes to the mall and pays someone else to do it.
Thank God! Good move for our marriage :)
He did this last Saturday.

And a certain someone was quite sad to be left behind.
It was so cute!
Brokaw was pacing back and forth, looking for Michael for about half an hour!
So sweet.
Bubba loves his Daddy.

And.... Sunday, SUNDAY!
Such an awesome time with our good friends, Pat and Lavina.
They brought lunch, which included an appetizer, and dessert!!! :)

I can't even begin to tell you how much I love these two people!!
Pat and Lavina are really good friends.
The kind of people who help you move, not once, but twice.
The kind of people who bring lasagna, cupcakes and muffins and dip to your house, eat it, and chill with you for an entire Sunday afternoon.
Pat and Michael played web nerds together.
Lavina and I talked girl-talk in the living room.
I love her, she's like a little sister. :)

Then, miracle of miracles, Pat hooked our HDTV antenna up in my closet, of all places! He is seriously a cable guy. Like a for-real cable guy! No more rabbit ears! Not even a cord in sight.
Pat, you are my hero.

We were so filled after their visit.
Filled with yummy food.
And filled with joy that we have such good friends!
Love you guys!! Shout out to you!!

In "Beautiful" Iowa

Hey, y'all.
Well, after making a bunch of pumpkin chocolate chip muffins, and enough meals to last Michael like a week (even though I'm only going to be gone for 2 days)...

And packing up what is essentially a mobile television studio (well, Steve did the packing)

I'm in Iowa.
Yippee!
It sounds dull and drab and boring to most people.
I get that.
But you know what? This flat, brown, dry place is the epicenter of the beginning of presidential politics. So, while it's no Santa Barbara, California, I'm happy as can be to be here!

Plus, a good meal, some Cold Stone ice cream, and a nice hotel is what it is, no matter where you are.
And, you all know how I love me some "me" time.
Well... I'm getting some of that tonight.
Chillin' in the bed alone here in my hotel room, watching 60 minutes.
Heaven.

I'm committed to photographing my hotel rooms, so, here you go.

I'm the type that moves into a hotel room. I like order, okay?
So, of course, I set it up in a way that is the most like home that I can.
I line all my stuff up for when I'll need it.
Which is a good thing, because starting at o'dark 30 tomorrow morning, we're in for like a 24 hour day!

I almost always wish I would have brought a power strip with me. Is it just me? Do I just have too many electronic devices? Or are all hotel rooms short on plugs? Gotta charge that stuff up, ya know?

Here's my beautiful view of... Iowa.

Beautiful, isn't it? I could not live here. But, there is a Starbucks across the street, a drive-thru one, I might add, so... I'm a happy girl.

I just might be having an update-the-blog-a-thon tonight.. so, stay tuned, if you so wish.

Redeeming Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays

Hi everyone. It's been a while since I've written about our Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays.
Remember this post about my crying?

Well... a lot has changed since then.
In December, we stopped having the woman from the home health agency come on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays. I've been helping Michael with all of the bathroom stuff for the past few months.

It hasn't been easy. It's actually quite disgusting! And who wants to deal with bathroom nastiness before making breakfast, right?

But - I have to update you because there has been a seismic shift in how we handle these bathroom days, and it has made a tremendous difference in our quality of life!!

Michael recently figured out he can handle taking care of a major part of it HIMSELF. Sparing me from some major dirty-job duty. I'll spare you the details (thank me for that) and just let you know that it's nowhere near as traumatic as it used to be. I don't dread Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays like I used to. So, life is a lot nicer in our house right now.

In fact, praise God, I have found a way to REDEEM Monday, Wedensday and Friday. A reason to actually look forward to it, and enjoy the 30 minutes I have while he's going to the bathroom.

Yes, that's a picture of the end of a cheesy 90s workout video on my television.
I've been working out! Goal, check!!
I'm not looking to lose major poundage here, although that would be nice, but I have enjoyed the opportunity to do my little 15 minute dance-your-butt-off video and a 10 minute strength training video (thank you, Netflix!) while he's in there doing his thing.

And, I can stomach breakfast afterwards.
Things are looking up!

I often struggle with feeling like my every moment is taken up taking care of everyone else (everyone being my husband, pets, and work family) and I have no time for myself. Well, 30 minutes of doing cheesy grapevines and step-touches in my living room by myself, for myself, isn't much. But it's something right? It's a start.

So, for now, on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays (sometimes it's been Saturdays recently because that 4am wakeup call on weekdays does get old!) I get up, take care of the dogs, stretch Michael's legs, get him up in the bathroom, then I'm free to put on my booty tight black pants and tennis shoes and bounce my chubby self around the living room for half an hour, before I go back in the bathroom to give him a shower. It feels good.
Real good.
The sweet taste of redemption never sours.

Mind and Picture Dump

I have a little bit of time on my hands, so that's the reason for the mind and picture dump.
I just want to get this stuff on the record, so I don't forget it.
So, it is what it is, folks.

Here is some other randomness from our life over the last 10 days or so.
I put a new slipcover on our love seat.

It's very bright and cheery, yes?
It looks orange in this picture. And, while I would welcome an orange love seat with open arms, alas, this one is actually red.
It's a nice change of pace.
The Mr. wasn't sure when I bought this slipcover off of Craigslist what he thought of it. But, he likes it! So, yay.

I've been continuing my quest to not look like a fat, aging non accessorized beast lately, as you know.
Hence, the bracelet I wore on Friday.

Ain't it cute?
This was my Mom's. I don't remember the story behind it. But I think it's from the 70s or the 80s or something. I remember stealing it several times when I was growing up. And, I guess she finally caved and gave it to me.
I love it.
It's beautiful.

Speaking of things from the past that have recently surfaced. Check this picture out!!!

Got Milk????
I was looking through some old pictures on my computer and came across this. Isn't it a riot? That chubby white chubster in the front, is my little brother, now SGT Chris Brown! I'm right behind him. I do not know what is going on here exactly, but I believe this was taken at our babysitter's house. I do not remember it. But I've always loved this picture.

Too bad I posted it on Facebook, purely with the intention of humiliating my little brother, who then made it his profile picture. So much for that.
Where in the world does he get that unending confidence??

In other news, I think I have finally caught the concept of napping.

It is glorious, and I wouldn't mind one right now. As if.

30, Flirty and Fabulous

Lately, I've been reminded of the simple power of friends.
It's just good to be with people.
To laugh with them.
Eat with them.
Just be with them.

Last weekend, we went out to celebrate my friend from high school, Blaire's 30th birthday!
Turning 30 is something you have to do in your own way.
And I think Blaire rocked it.
It was a joy to share with her, some other friends, and her family.

You see this darling little blonde sitting across from me? That's Melissa. Melissa, Blaire and I cheered together at Indian River High School in the 90s. It was epic. There was lots of navy blue polyester and bangs. Great memories.

My favorite part of the evening was when Blaire read what her mom had written her and opened the most beautiful gift, a ring, made especially for her, from the rings her dad had given her mom.
It was so beautiful and I was touched by the special love this mom has for her daughter.
Reminds me of me and my mama. Mamas and baby girls are bonded in a special way, there's no denying that.

So, happy (late now) birthday, Blaire! Rock it girl. You are thirty, flirty and fabulous. And, you're married to a guy with a million dollar smile. There's nothing wrong with that!

How it Took me 2.5 Hours to get to Work

Tomorrow will mark one week since the most unnecessary 2.5 hour commute to work, ever.
Folks, I live next to a Metro station. Now, it's suburban Northern Virginia, so it still takes 10-15 minutes to walk to said Metro station, but still, the point is, we're right there.

My lazy self has not liked walking in the cold and/or rain to the Metro lately. Well, across the street is the Mall. There are several buses that go from the mall (or mall area) directly to the metro. Brilliant, right?

Err.
Wrong.
If you're me.
And you get on the one bus that is not going directly to the Metro station, but instead is going on a tour of Northern Virginia.

Nope.
If you're me, you'll be on this bus for a full hour, even while the bus driver stops to take his lunch break! Not even kidding. The man ate a sandwich.
He checked on me, that was nice.
But, I was fine.
I was in contact with my dear husband, who was navigating for me, from home, via the transportation system's website.

About an hour after I left home, I passed it again, as we pulled into that metro station.
You know, the one a block from our apartment complex?
Yeah, that one.

Thankfully, I didn't have anywhere pressing to be that morning, and my boss was very understanding at my tardiness.
Oy vey, right?

I decided it was a good day for a free latte and oatmeal from Starbucks.
That was a good call.
